Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School wrapped up its Snow Week festivities last week. And after all the dress-up days, along with activities like bingo and karaoke, things wrapped up with White Out Day and a pep fest on Friday, January 16.
Although the Snow Week court joked about the lack of snow on the ground to make their snow angels in the beginning of January, Mother Nature delivered powerful wind gusts along with snow, making for blizzard-like conditions and making schools close early. But it would take more than a dusting of snow and wind to cancel the pep fest.
Like homecoming, the Snow Week pep fest began with a rock-paper-scissors tournament. After several students battled it out, sophomore MaKenzie Westphal took the win. A fun game of musical chairs was next.
Both reporters for the Independent and the Janesville Journal ended up getting involved in musical chairs. As part of the game, participants had to grab an item each time after the music stopped. When there were only three students left, teacher Jessica Oelke announced the participants had to find a newspaper employee. Blake Bure found the Journal reporter, while Lily Quast chased down yours truly, leaving Mr. Snow Angel Travyn Shoultz with no one. This reporter would like to think he was Quast’s lucky charm, as after Bure tried to steal her item in the final round, she was announced the winner of musical chairs.
After that was a game of dodgeball between grades 9-12. The seniors had a big win over the freshmen, while the sophomores took care of the juniors. While the seniors usually got some advantages over their opponent, it was the sophomores that took care of business and won the tournament.
A new game, wig snatching, was as simple as it sounded; contestants had to snatch wigs from each other, and the last one standing won. Senior Michael Walker took the win for his class.
Lastly, there was a friendly matchup of hamster ball. A dozen contestants from grades 7-12 were part of the tournament bracket. The final matchup was Kasuo Waguk against Jaxon Wolff. Waguk had been making his matchups look easy, whacking every opponent off the runway of mat they had. He had no issues taking the win against Wolff, either. It was a fantastic finish to a Snow Week that looked more green than white until the recent snows came through. As a bonus, the JWP’s boys’ basketball team, ranked in the top five of Class A, defeated conference rival Hayfield 84-56.
